アストン・ビラの女子チームに所属する元イングランド女子代表DFアニタ・アサンテ(36)が今シーズン限りでの引退を表明した。
アーセナルの育成組織出身のアサンテは、2003-04シーズンにファーストチームへと昇格した。2000年代に一時代を築き上げたアーセナルの一員として数々のタイトルを獲得し、リーグでは加入後のシーズンから5連覇を達成。2006-07シーズンにはUEFA女子カップ(現:女子チャンピオンズリーグ/UWCL)を含むクアドラプル(※1)も達成し、5シーズンで12個のタイトルを獲得した。
2008–09シーズンにはチェルシーへと移籍し、以降はアメリカやスウェーデンのクラブでプレー。再びのチェルシーを経て2020-21シーズンからは初昇格を果たしたアストン・ビラへ加入。ボランチやセンターバックとしてFW岩渕真奈とともにプレーしている。
イングランド代表としても71試合2得点を記録し、2度のワールドカップ(W杯)、3度の女子ユーロを経験。なでしこジャパンが優勝した2011年の女子ドイツW杯では、日本に唯一土を付けた試合にも出場している。翌年のロンドン・オリンピックにもイギリス女子代表として参加した。
アサンテはクラブ公式サイトを通じ、アストン・ビラへの感謝やクラブへ貢献できたことの達成感などを綴っている。
