カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)で優勝し、悲願のトロフィーを獲得したアルゼンチン代表FWリオネル・メッシ。試合後にはそのトロフィーを掲げるメッシの姿や、家族と一緒に喜びを共有する姿が印象的だった。
メッシと喜びを分かち合っていたのは、妻のアントネラ・ロクソさん。2人はともにアルゼンチンのロサリオ出身で、メッシは1987年6月24日に、ロクソさんは1988年2月26日生まれ。同学年ということになる。
2人の出会いは5歳の時。メッシが幼少期を過ごしたクラブ、ニューウェルス・オールドボーイズでプレーした際のチームメイトの従姉妹がロクソさんだったという。そういう意味では、2人は小さい時からの幼馴染だ。
メッシは出会った時から一目惚れしていたことを後に明かしていたが、交際がスタートしたのは17歳頃。ロクソさんの友人が事故死しショックを受けていた時に、当時バルセロナに所属していたメッシがわざわざアルゼンチンに戻って励ましたのだ。そのことがきっかけとなり交際へと発展した。
そこからロクソさんがスペインへと移住すると、2012年11月には長男のチアゴくんが誕生。さらに2015年9月には次男のマテオくんが誕生。2人は事実婚状態を継続していたが、2017年6月にはとうとう故郷のロサリオで挙式して入籍。その後3男のシロくんも誕生している。
メッシは35歳。ロクソさんとは30年来の仲ということになる。ずっとメッシを支えてきたロクソさんにとっても、W杯優勝の喜びは図りしれないものだったのではないだろうか。

パリ・サンジェルマン(PSG)のアルゼンチン代表FWリオネル・メッシにとってマテ茶は欠かせないもの。
南米のソウルドリンクとして知られるマテ茶。ビタミンやミネラルの含有量が高いマテ茶は、アルゼンチン代表選手たちの間でも愛飲されている。
メッシもカタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)の優勝後のインタビューで「妻と一緒にマテ茶を飲みながら、ゆっくりと優勝の喜びを味わいたい」と語っていたほどのお気に入りだ。
マテ茶は茶漉しがついた専用のストローを差し込んで飲むのだが、メッシはストローも特別なものを使っているようだ。
アルゼンチン『TN』によると、メッシはウルグアイのフェデリコ・ブレシアーニさんにストローの制作を直接依頼。ブレシアーニさんがW杯優勝の記念に特別なものを作ったという。
「直接連絡してきたんだ。彼は、自分用のものと家族に贈る用のものをと言ってきました。W杯の開催期間中だった。そして、決勝のタイミングで、この機会にボンビージャ(ストロー)を作ってあげようと思いついんだ」
「ボンビージャは銀と金でできていて、600ドル(約77000円)もする。土台に18金
、飲み口の部分に9金をミックスして、W杯トロフィーと星の刻印には18金を採用した。この特別な瞬間を祝い、楽しむために作られデザインされた私たちの宝石だ」

また、メッシとブレシアーニさんを巡り合わせのは、バルセロナ時代のマテ茶仲間であるグレミオのウルグアイ代表FWルイス・スアレスだったという。
「ルイス・スアレスのおかげで、彼は私たちと知り合った。何年か前に私たちが作った最初のマテ茶を彼に渡した。他の選手同様に謙虚な姿勢に感心させられたんだ。その写真を彼のインスタグラムにアップされたのが、なんだか誇らしかった」
カタールで悲願のW杯優勝を果たしたメッシ。歓喜のマテ茶はさぞ美味しかったのではないだろうか。

元アルゼンチン代表MFハビエル・パストーレ(34)がやはり現役引退へ。
淡いピンクのユニフォームを纏ったパレルモ時代に脚光を浴び、以後パリ・サンジェルマン(PSG)、ローマでもプレーしたパストーレ。端正な顔立ちも人気を博した正真正銘のクラックだ。
しかし、そんな彼の現在地は「無所属」。昨夏カタール・スターズリーグのカタールSCを半年で退団後、どのクラブにも属しておらず、以前から問題を抱える股関節の状態が極めて良くないことを明かしている。
今回、アルゼンチン『La Nacion』の取材では、耐え難い股関節の痛み、そしてそれに伴う苦しみに苛まれてきたことを告白。どうやら心は現役引退で固まってるようだ。
「痛みに耐えられなかった…目覚めの瞬間に気分が悪くなり、自然と脳が僕に『もうサッカーを辞める時だ』と語りかけていた。けど、僕自身が受け入れられず、苦しむことを決めたんだ」
「サッカーを続けるためにできることは全て試してみた。けど、望む結果は何もない。練習とプレーは再開できたが、日々の生活は悪いまま。一度紅白戦をやってみたら、その後2日間ベッドで寝て過ごすことになったんだ…痛みでね」
「消耗しきった股関節に再び負荷をかける…有害みたいだ。痛みは以前にも増して大きくなり、サッカーが楽しみではなく、ただの罰になってしまったよ。子どもたちとボールを蹴ることさえままならない」
「今は左足の股関節に人工股関節を入れてある。すべてセラミックでね。毎朝リハビリに励み、なんとか生活は元通りだ。『普通の生活』がこんなにハッピーだなんてね」
「この数年間、常に現役引退の準備をしてきた。股関節が元気だったころ、僕はフットボーラーとしてなんだってできると信じていた…今日の僕はピッチに立つことを一切考えていない」

これまでのサッカー界には、数多くのクリエイティブな選手が存在した。それは、サッカーのスタイルが大きく変化した現代にも存在しているが、当然のことながらそのプレースタイルも変化している。
一方で、自分のスタイルを崩さずに輝きを放ち続けようともがいた選手も多くいる。しかし、その多くが、サッカースタイルの波に敗れたり、リーグの特性、チームコンセプトの犠牲になっていった。
クリエイティブな選手としてパッと想像される中には、現在はレアル・マドリーで指揮を執るジネディーヌ・ジダンがいるだろう。ボールを持った時の立ち姿やドリブルで相手をかわす姿勢など、そのプレー自体がエレガントさに溢れており、現役ラストマッチとなった2006年ドイツ・ワールドカップ決勝での頭突きは世界が衝撃に包まれた。
そのジダンと肩を並べるクリエイティビティを持ち、自身のスタイルを貫き通したがために、意外なキャリアを歩むこととなったのが、元アルゼンチン代表MFファン・セバスティアン・ベロンだ。

ベロンがキャリアをスタートさせたのは、母国のエストゥディアンテス。クラブの歴史において偉大な人物であり、“ブルッハ(魔法使い)”の愛称で親しまれたファン・ラモン・ベロン氏を父に持つベロンは、同じ道を歩んだ。
プロキャリアスタートから1年半で名門のボカ・ジュニアーズに移籍。すると半年で海を渡り、21歳でサンプドリアへと加入した。
当時からベロンのプレースタイルは異次元と言って良いもの。誰もが想像つかないような創造性を備え、独自のルールでプレーをしていた様にさえ見えるほど。ただ、その創造性がズバ抜けていたことで、チームの中心選手でもあった。
1998年に加入したパルマでは、同胞のFWエルナン・クレスポとのコンビがフィーバー。2人のコンビネーションの破壊力は抜群で、“ミラクル・パルマ”と呼ばれるチームの中心を担った。
プロビンチャ(地方クラブ)に過ぎなかったパルマだが、このシーズンは若きジャンルイジ・ブッフォンを守護神に、ファビオ・カンナバーロ、リリアン・テュラム、ネストル・センシーニの3バックが構えた。ベロンはトップ下で攻撃をコントロール。チームはUEFAカップ(現ヨーロッパリーグ)とコッパ・イタリアを制した。
強力なクレスポとのコンビは、1999年にそのままラツィオへと移籍。すると、ラツィオではスクデットとコッパ・イタリア優勝を成し遂げ、その創造性でチームを牽引した。
イタリアでの3クラブでは遺憾なく創造性を見せつけていたベロンは、2001年7月にマンチェスター・ユナイテッドへと加入。この移籍が1つの転機となった。

当時のイングランド史上最高の移籍金2810万ポンド(当時のレートで約50億円)でユナイテッドへと加入したベロンは、異色の存在だったと言える。当時のメンバーでは、92年組と呼ばれるデイビッド・ベッカムやポール・スコールズ、ライアン・ギグスの他、ロイ・キーンやオーレ・グンナー・スールシャール、ルート・ファン・ニステルローイなどがいた。
超名門であってもベロンはその持ち前の感覚で、チームに違いをもたらす。2002-03シーズンにはプレミアリーグを制覇と結果も残した。
しかし、ベロンが異彩を放てた試合はセリエA時代と比べると大きく制限がされていた。その理由の1つは、ポジションの変更だ。
当時トップ下を置いていたセリエAとは違い、イングランドでは伝統的にフラットな[4-4-2]が採用。そのため、ベロンのポジションは1列下がったところに置かれた。
加えてプレミアリーグの激しいスタイルもベロンを困らせる。創造的なプレーに集中できなくなったベロンは、ユナイテッドでは自ら汗をかき、守備のタスクもこなす必要があったのだ。
チャンピオンズリーグというヨーロッパの舞台や、守備を重点的にプレーするフィル・ネビルとのコンビではその力を存分に発揮したベロンだが、リーグ戦では結果が出せず。ロマン・アブラモビッチ氏がオーナーとなったチェルシーに2003年8月へ移籍。しかし、チェルシーでも結果を残せず、インテルへと移籍し、イタリアで再びプレーした。

インテルでプレーした後、2006年7月にプロキャリアをスタートさせたエストゥディアンテスへと復帰。すでに終わった選手としてのレッテルを剥がし、完全復活を果たした。
2009年には父と同じように愛するクラブをコパ・リベルタドーレス優勝に導き、自身も2008、2009年と2年連続で南米最優秀選手に選出。ベロンには欧州からのオファーもあったが、エストゥディアンテスへの愛情を示して残留すると、2014年にスパイクを脱ぐ。その後2017年に一度現役復帰するも、引退後はクラブの会長職を務めている。
キャリアを通してセリエAやプレミアリーグのタイトルも勝ち取ってきたベロンだが、キャリアで最も印象的な瞬間について、2009年のコパ・リベルタドーレス優勝だと語っており、いかにその瞬間がベロンにとって大きなものだったかが分かる。世界一にもなれた創造主は、母国で新たな才能を生み出すことに力を割いている。

カタール・ワールドカップ(W杯)でアルゼンチン代表にトロフィーをもたらせたGKエミリアーノ・マルティネスが、その思い出を足に刻んだ。
18日に行われたW杯決勝でフランス代表と対戦したアルゼンチン。守護神であるマルティネスは、大会を通じて高パフォーマンスを見せていた中、決勝でもビッグセーブを見せる。
試合はキリアン・ムバッペにハットトリックを許したが、PK戦では見事なセーブを見せて優勝に貢献。その後の行動は大きな批判を浴びているが、優勝に貢献したことは間違いない。
特に、延長後半の絶体絶命のピンチを救った姿は多くの人の記憶に残っているのではないだろうか。アディショナルタイム3分、ラストプレーとも言える場面で、アバウトなボールがディフェンスラインの裏に抜けると、完全にフリーで抜けたランダル・コロ・ムアニがボックス内で余裕を持ってシュート。マルティネスは、相手のシュートに反応して足を伸ばすと、左足一本でセーブしてみせた。
決まっていてもおかしくない場面、ラストプレーでのビッグセーブとなったが、その左足にマルティネスはW杯トロフィーをのタトゥーを刻んだ。
3つの星とともにトロフィーを刻んだマルティネス。ファンは「この足が助けた」、「史上最高のアルゼンチン人GK」、「史上最高のセーブ」、「神の脚だ」、「彼のプレーは尊重しないと」と、トロフィーをもたらせた“神の脚”への感謝の言葉が並べられた。
一方で、タトゥーのクオリティについて物議が。「十分なお金があるはずなのになぜ安いアーティストに頼むのか」、「もっと完璧にできるアーティストはいる」と、よりクオリティの高いタトゥーを入れないことへの疑問が並べられた。
さらに、写真ではマルティネスの右足の指が4本しか見えず、人差し指が欠損しているようにも見える。実際は小指が短くサンダルで隠れているだけなのだが、「彼は指がない?」、「指はどこに行った?」と心配する声も相次いでいる。
